The mission of San Francisco Housing Development Corporation (SFHDC) is to foster financial stability through the development of affordable housing, the facilitation of asset building & financial empowerment, and revitalization of San Francisco’s underserved neighborhoods. Our four core program areas are Affordable Housing Development, Financial Empowerment, Community Economic Development, and Supportive Resident Services.
Founded in 1988 by a group of primarily African American community leaders, SFHDC’s purpose from day one has been to stem the tide of displacement that disproportionately affects African Americans and other people of color. For more than 31 years, SFHDC has provided comprehensive housing counseling services to low and moderate income households across San Francisco and the greater Bay Area. Currently, SFHDC offers group education and one-on-one counseling on money management, credit building, the homebuying process, resolving and avoiding mortgage defaults, home maintenance, rental readiness, and barrier removal of impediments which may limit access to housing and financial opportunities. Simultaneously, SFHDC develops ownership and rental homes in San Francisco that are safe, affordable, and attractive as a means to stabilize the pool of affordable housing in high-cost San Francisco and complement our housing counseling services.
