Unity Economic Development Corporation
Unity Economic Development Corporation (UEDC) was created as an outreach arm of the Union Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, which was founded in 1868 in Brandywine, MD. Members of the congregation started it as a "self-help" organization for people in the community coming to the church to request cash assistance for living expenses, such as housing, utilities, food and medicine.
The purpose of the organization was to provide "self-empowerment tools" that would give people a "hand up" instead of an handout. The organization was formally chartered as a nonprofit charitable organization on July 5th, 2002. It became a HUD-approved housing counseling agency in 2010. Since that time it has provided training and counseling to thousands of families seeking services in need of gaining control of their personal finances.
